Rekey your locks when you move in.
When you buy or rent a home, you have no way of knowing how many copies of the old keys exist: previous owners, tenants, neighbors, contractors, and agents may all have had one. Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing locks so only your new keys work. Lock Raven rekeys homes across Central Maryland and can put every door on one key when the locks allow it.
What gets rekeyed
- Front, back, and side door deadbolts and knobs or levers.
- The door from the garage into the house.
- Storm doors, sheds, or mailboxes if they use a keyed cylinder.
One key for every door
Locks can be rekeyed to the same key when they share a keyway, which usually means the same brand. A mix of Schlage and Kwikset, for example, normally needs one cylinder replaced to match.

Rekey a new home: common questions.
Straight answers, without the upsell.
Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?
Usually, because the existing hardware stays. If a lock is worn or damaged, we will recommend replacing that one instead.
Do I need to rekey a newly built home?
It is a good idea. Builders and subcontractors may have used construction keys during the build.
How much will it cost?
It depends on the hardware, the door, and the number of locks, so we price every job before any work starts. Call with the details, or send the quote form, and you will have a price before you commit to anything.
